About gum health.
It is common, but it is not normal. Bleeding is usually the first visible sign of inflammation, and at that stage, when it is gingivitis, it is reversible. Left alone it can progress to periodontal disease, which is not.
A deep cleaning that goes below the gumline to remove hardened deposits from the root surfaces, so the gum tissue can reattach and the pockets around your teeth can shrink. It is done with the area numbed.
Once pockets have formed they collect deposits faster than healthy gums do. Periodontal maintenance keeps them stable. It is the ongoing part of the treatment, not an upsell after it.
