Almost everything else in this practice exists because prevention was missed somewhere. Decay found on an X-ray is a filling; the same decay found when it starts to hurt is often a root canal and a crown.

About examinations and cleanings.
There is no point at which you have waited too long to come back. We see patients whose last appointment was many years ago. The examination is the same, the conversation is matter-of-fact, and nobody comments on the gap.
For most people it is pressure and vibration rather than pain. If your gums are inflamed it can be tender, and in that case we can numb the area. Just say so, before or during the appointment.
Decay between teeth, bone loss around them and problems at the root are all invisible to the eye and painless until they are advanced. Digital X-rays use a low dose and show us those areas immediately, on screen, so we can show you what we are describing.
Grinding and clenching, or bruxism, usually happens during sleep, and it wears enamel flat, cracks teeth and breaks restorations. A custom guard is moulded to your bite so that load goes into the appliance instead of your teeth.
